Kind of suspension in which vehicle sprung mass is supported by air spring either entirely or partly. Column of compressed air inside the rubber below act as spring bears the load.
Basically suspension absorbs road shocks from passing on to chassis and passenger. This absorption is best done when suspension stiffness is the least for a given load. As load keeps varying suspension stiffness need to vary correspondingly to have better shock absorption. This cannot be achieved in conventional leaf spring while air suspension sense the load and adjust stiffness accordingly.
Air suspension uses air spring to bear load. Air springs offer lower stiffness for a given load carrying capacity. In conjunction with the valves, the air springs offer variable stiffness for varying load conditions.
Basic elements of Air Suspension:
• Mechanism to control axle motion in relation to chassis.
Link Type Suspension, which has Control Arms constituting
1. Radius rods & 2. Parallel Links.
• Air spring to offer low stiffness.
• Levelling Valve to sense height variation of chassis & enable changes in Air Spring stiffness.
• Shock Absorber to damp vibrations.
Shock Absorbers are of heavy duty type and specially designed for this application.
Should not be interchanged with ordinary one.
• Provision to smoothen out low amplitude disturbances through specially designed rubber bushes at pivot points.
No lubrication is required as all joints have spherilastic bushes.
